The following are steps to join your Windows 8 computer to the Princeton domain and configure your computer for shared resources and printing. For background information and for instructions for other operating systems, please see: www.princeton.edu/domain.
Solution:
To proceed with the instructions below, you should be logged into your Windows
8 computer with an account that has administrative rights.
1. Register your computer in the Princeton Host Database
The process may take up to an hour, and you will receive email messages as
the process begins and is completed.
- You must first determine the unique Ethernet and wireless addresses of your computer.
- Register your computer in the Host Database (make sure the correct addresses are entered for the correct interface - Do not mix your wireless and Ethernet addresses).
2. Create/Reset Domain account
Use the Account Maintenance page to request that your computer be added to the Princeton domain or that your account be reset. Here are the direct links:
- Student machine - Add/Reset. If the account doesn't exist, create it; otherwise reset it.
- DeSC machine - Add/Reset. If the account doesn't exist, create it; otherwise reset it.
- Departmental machine - Add/Reset. If the account doesn't exist, create it; otherwise reset it.
- Machine Account Management - Add/Reset/Remove. If the account doesn't exist, create it; otherwise reset it.
- Close out of your browser.
3. Name your computer and join the Princeton domain
- Right-click Computer from All apps screen
- Select Properties
- To the right of the computer name, click on the Change settings link. Windows 8 may ask for your permission to continue.
- Go to the Computer Name tab
- Click on the Change button
- In the Computer Name field, type the name of the computer you created/reset in step 2 above
- In the Member of section, select Domain and type PRINCETON in the field
- Click the More button
- Uncheck the box for Change Primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes
- In the Primary DNS Suffix of the computer field, type princeton.edu
- Click OK to close the DNS suffix... window
- Click OK to close the Computer Name/Domain Changes window
- Enter your netID and password when prompted. Click OK.
- You will get a message saying Welcome to the PRINCETON domain
- Reboot
Note: If you get an error, make sure the computer name exactly matches the
computer domain account you created in Step 2 above. If you get access denied
error, the computer account needs to be reset (see Step 2).
4. Create your own profile with Administrator privileges (optional)
- Right click Computer from All apps screen
- Choose Manage
- Windows 8 may ask for your permission to continue. Click Continue.
- Click on Local Users and Groups in the left panel
- Double click on Groups
- Double click on Administrators
- Click on Add. Enter netID and password when prompted.
- In the Enter the Object Names to Select enter Princeton\netID
- Click Check Names
- Click OK twice

5. Log in to the Princeton Domain with your University netID
- On the log in screen, select Other user.
- Enter your University netID and password. Confirm Sign in to PRINCETON appears below the password.
6. Map your H: drive
- Right click Computer from All apps screen
- Choose Map Network Drive...
- Select the box Reconnect at sign-in
- Change drive letter to H:
- In the Folder field, enter \\files\NetID

Click Finish
7. Copy any data created under the administrator profile (optional)
- If your account does not have Administrative privileges, sign in with the administrative account.

Locate data and copy to new profile
8. Configure Wireless Interface
- Select Desktop from All apps screen
- From the right side of the task bar, click on the network icon
- Select puwireless
- Check the box next to Connect automatically
- Click Connect
- Select No, don't turn on sharing or connect to devices
