Title:
IMAP E-mail: Forwarding, passwords, vacation messages, spam, quota

Synopsis:
Account management for IMAP e-mail users: how to forward your mail, set or change your account passwords, update your contact information, check account quotas, set a vacation message, enable spam filtering or request an e-mail restore. To access your e-mail account at Princeton for the first time, you must first activate it and set a secure password.

Solution:

Go to the Account Management page to achieve any of the following options for your IMAP e-mail.

  • Set or change your password: Use the Password Management Facility to set or change your IMAP e-mail password (it will be referred to as your Directory password).

  • Change your contact information in the LDAP directory: Change your listed contact information in the campus directory. This facility is limited and changes may require contacting the Housing Department or Human Resources.

  • Check your quota: This page will display quota information for your IMAP e-mail account as well as your Unix account. If you are over quota in any account, you have the options of removing some of the contents of the account or purchasing additional quota.

  • Set a vacation message: The vacation message feature is useful when you plan to be away. Click the box next to 'Send an auto-reply message to your correspondents.' Enter a subject line, a start date and an end date, and select how often an auto-reply should be sent. Indicate to whom an auto-reply should be sent, and whether internal and external correspondents should get different replies. Type in your vacation message and then click the Submit button. After you have successfully set your vacation message, an auto-reply will be sent to your correspondents as you have indicted, as long as you have indicated. (Please note: OIT is following up on reports of vacation message auto-replies being sent more often than requested. If you experience such a problem, please contact the OIT Help Desk.) Or, if you wish, when you return to reading e-mail, you can return to this Account Management page to uncheck the box next to 'Send an auto-reply message to your correspondents' and click the Stop button to complete the operation. If you are forwarding your e-mail to another account, the vacation message will not operate (since mail is not actually received at your account, but instead forwarded on). If you desire to have your mail forwarded AS WELL AS send an auto-response/vacation message, you must leave a copy of your mail messages on the IMAP server. See the Account Management page for more information.

  • Forward your e-mail: Where is your mail going? This page is for forwarding your e-mail to another address temporarily or permanently. Click on "Change Entry" for full instructions. You can have your mail delivered to two locations (your Princeton IMAP Inbox and another account) if you so choose.

  • Configure your spam preferences: This page allows you to configure spam settings for your e-mail account.

  • Manage your e-mail folders: Use this page to see a list of your mail folders and the amount of space they are using on the IMAP server. Here you will also be given the opportunity to expunge deleted messages, empty your Trash or empty your Spam folder. This is very helpful when troubleshooting over quota messages.

  • Restore deleted e-mail messages: Your IMAP e-mail account is backed-up nightly. Restores from account backups are available on a folder basis (i.e., restoring a particular message is not possible). If you have mistakenly deleted e-mail messages, it may be possible to restore the particular folder in which the messages were saved. Use this page to submit a restore request to the Help Desk.
