Your Princeton University account and netID: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Solution:
Your netID is the portion of your e-mail address before the @ sign.
Do you already have an account? If you're not sure, just search for your own name in the Campus Online Directory. If you find that you already have a Princeton e-mail address, then you have an account. If you do not find yourself in the Online Directory and wish to open an account, see Solution 2710.
Incoming students are mailed an activation password to their homes in early June prior to matriculation. This password can only be used to activate their accounts and set new, secure passwords from the Account Activation page. For University faculty and authorized staff, the netID may be activated no sooner than three months before hire date, and 7 days for PPPL faculty and staff. For more information, see www.princeton.edu/activate.
Spouses, dependents and domestic partners are not eligible for University netIDs or e-mail addresses.
Your Princeton netID
All Princeton University students, faculty, and staff members have access to the Internet. This allows you to
- send and receive e-mail;
- browse the web for information from Princeton and around the world;
- participate in electronic discussion groups and mailing lists;
- work on the OIT-supported Unix systems and within the Windows domain;
- access networked computing resources around campus.
The key to all these services is your netID. This is the name by which OIT's computing systems know you, and the address of your electronic communications with anyone else, here on campus or on the other side of the world.
Everyone at Princeton has a @princeton.edu e-mail address. That identifies Princeton University as a unique location on the Internet. Each student, faculty and staff member also has a unique identifier, for example, marydoe or aasmytth. Complete individual netIDs combine the elements to produce
or
aasmytth@princeton.edu
Your netID requires a secure and strong password. When you establish a new account or have a password reset by OIT, you must set a secure password and an enhanced security profile from the PUaccess page. Additional information about password security is recommended reading.
If you need assistance with establishing or using your netID or password, call the OIT Help Desk at 8-HELP (4357) and press option 1.
