Title:
Getting Started: How to configure network settings and join the Princeton domain

Synopsis:
How to configure networking on your computer to join, access, or authenticate to the Princeton domain

Solution:
Princeton University provides the campus computing environment with a Windows domain called PRINCETON. Joining the Princeton domain provides benefits for Windows computers, including:

  • Access to Windows file servers
  • Access to shared printers on the network
  • Automatically checks that McAfee VirusScan is installed and in its default location
  • Automatically runs McAfee's LiveUpdate program to update your computer's virus protection
  • Ensures that your computer receives critical security patches from Microsoft
  • Automatically maps your Central File server directory (also known as your H: drive) during the login process

DeSC computers are automatically configured to be members of the Princeton domain. For departmental computers that do not join the Princeton domain, see Solution 9491.

Determine Your Operating System
To determine what operating system your Vista Windows computer is running, cick on the Start button, and right-click on Computer. Select Properties. The version of Windows your computer is running will be notated in this window. For older versions of Windows, click on the Start button, select Settings... and pull over to Control Panel. Double-click on the System Control Panel.
