IMAP (Standard) e-mail: Settings for Outlook 2000

Synopsis:
Configuration settings for Microsoft Outlook 2000 for IMAP users. (These directions can also be applied to Outlook 98).

Solution:
Solution 5088 contains general information about supported email clients. Refer to the solution for a complete list of supported clients and to ascertain whether you are an IMAP or an Exchange-enabled user.

Set up your mail account
  1. Launch Outlook.

  2. If this is your first time using Outlook, the Outlook Wizard will startup and step you through configuring your mail account. If you already have an e-mail account set up, you will need to add a new account for Princeton's IMAP service. To manually start-up the Internet Connection Wizard (if it has not launched automatically), go to the Tools menu and choose Accounts and from the Accounts window click Add -> Mail

  3. Follow the Internet Connection Wizard screens, entering the appropriate information for your mail account.

  4. Type in your name. Click Next.

  5. From the My incoming mail server pulldown menu select IMAP.
Under the Incoming mail server heading type imap.princeton.edu.
Under the Outgoing mail server heading type smtp.princeton.edu.
Note: As of 2/15/06, the POP protocol will no longer be supported by OIT.

  6. Click Next.

  7. On the Internet Mail Logon panel, type in your account name. Your Account name is your NetID. (This is the part of your e-mail address before the "@" sign.) Click Next.

  8. If your computer is connected to the campus network, choose Connect using my local area network (LAN). Click Next.

  9. Finally, click Finish

  10. You should now have your Princeton account listed in the Internet Accounts Window. From your list of accounts, select your newly created IMAP account and click Properties. Make sure that the option Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing is checked.

  11. Click on the Servers tab. Make sure the Incoming mail server is set to imap.princeton.edu and that the outgoing mail server is set to smtp.princeton.edu - At the bottom of the window, under Outgoing Mail Server, check the box for "My server requires authentication."

  12. When the "My server requires authentication" box is checked, the Settings.... box then becomes available. Click on the Settings... button and click the radio button that says "Use same settings as my incoming mail server."

    Click OK.

  13. Click on the Advanced tab. Check BOTH the option This server requires a secure connection under Outgoing mail (SMTP) as well as Incoming mail (IMAP) for secure access to the outgoing SMTP Authenticated server and IMAP server.

    Click OK.

Set up Princeton directory lookup in LDAP
You can configure Outlook to search for e-mail addresses from the Princeton University Directory Service (LDAP).

  2. Type in ldap.princeton.edu as the Internet directory (LDAP) server name. Click Next.

  3. Select Yes for using this directory for checking addresses. Click Next.

  4. Click Finish.

  5. In the Directory Service tab, select ldap.princeton.edu and click Properties.

  6. In the ldap.princeton.edu Properties window, click on the Advanced tab. Enter
