Virtual Private Networking (VPN): Windows 2000 configuration settings
Solution:
Virtual Private Networking (VPN) can be used to access Princeton-specific resources from off-campus. For full details regarding VPN and configuration settings instructions for other operating systems, see Virtual Private Networking (VPN):

The installation procedure assumes that you have the following:
- TCP/IP is installed
- The "remote access" system service is started
- You have an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- Log on to your Windows 2000 computer as Administrator
- Right-click on the icon My Network Places
located on your desktop,and select Properties.
- Double-click the Make New Connection icon
,
this will start the Network Connection Wizard.
- Once the Network Connection Wizard launches, select the
Next button located at the bottom of the screen.
- The Network Connection Type box is displayed. Select Connect to
a private network through the internet, and click the Next
button located at the bottom on the screen.
- The Destination Address will now need to be specified. In the field provided
for the hostname enter vpn.princeton.edu, and select the
Next button located at the bottom of the screen.
- You will now need to make this connection available to For all
users.
- You will now need to type a name for your VPN connection; enter
Virtual Private Connection in the field provided. Select
the option add a shortcut to my desktop
located at the bottom of the screen. Select the Finish button
located at the bottom of the screen.
- You will need to enter you Princeton NetID and
Windows domain password in the fields provided. Select the
Connect button located at the bottom of the screen.
- If you are logged onto your computer with a local user account, you
will then get an authentication error and another Connect To screen, this
time with a "Domain" field. You will need to enter the following:
User name:
Password:
Domain: PRINCETONTo facilitate domain authentication in the future, open the Properties for the VPN connection (from Network connections) and check the box on the Options tab for "include Windows logon domain".
- Congratulations, you have established a connection via Princeton University's
VPN server.
