Solution:

The following instructions apply to Exchange accounts and Microsoft Outlook. For more information about Exchange, please see www.princeton.edu/exchange.

The Exchange server retains items deleted from the Deleted Items folder for 30 days. The items can be restored using the Recover Deleted Items feature in Outlook or Exchange WebMail (OWA).

How to recover deleted items in Outlook version 2010 or version 2007

  • Highlight any mailbox folder
  • From the Tools menu, choose Recover Deleted Items to open the Recover Deleted Items dialogue box
  • Highlight the item to be restored
  • Click on the folder icon (Recover Selected Items) on the toolbar
  • The item will be restored to the selected folder

How to recover deleted items in Outlook version 2003

  • Highlight the Deleted Items folder
  • From the Tools menu, choose Recover Deleted Items to open the Recover Deleted Items dialogue box
  • Highlight messages to restore
  • Click the folder icon on the toolbar
  • Messages will be restored to the Deleted Items folder

NOTE: After the deleted item has passed its 30 day retention period, it cannot be recovered using the Recover Deleted Items feature. Contact the OIT Help Desk for a Software Support representative visit for possible recovery.
