Title:
Outlook 2002: LDAP error when searching Online Directory requires software updates

Synopsis:
When using Outlook 2002 to search for e-mail addresses in the LDAP Directory, Outlook freezes or I receive one of the following error messages:

  • Unable to display results because too many entries in the Internet Directory match your search criteria.
  • The search could not be completed. MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED
  • Cannot contact the LDAP server (81) error
  • Microsoft Outlook does not recognize SearchString

Solution:
For users who installed the CD-based Outlook 2002, the out-of-the-box version of Outlook 2002 will not search the Online Campus Directory without user intervention. In order to do so, Outlook 2002 requires the most recent service packs (SP2) as well as an LDAP hotfix.

You must have your original install media to apply Office patches, and if you do not, you will need an OIT representative to help. If you require assistance or you are not an administrator of your computer, call the OIT Help Desk to provide support via assistance from Software Support, the OIT Solutions Center, your SCAD or DCS representative, or your RCC.

First ensure that you have Outlook 2002 update to Service Pack 2. Point your browser to: http://office.microsoft.com/OfficeUpdate/default.aspx and then choose Scan for Updates.

You will also need the LDAP hotfix which can be downloaded here: http://helpdesk.princeton.edu/files/9429/OLKINTL.msp - Download this file to your desktop and double-click on it to install.

If you acquire all of the Microsoft Office updates including Service Pack 2 and apply the LDAP hotfix, the search capabilities using the Campus Directory are improved. While composing a new message, type the last name only of a person's name in the To: Field, then click the 'Check Names' icon (which looks like a head with a check mark). If you prefer you can use the keyboard combination of Ctrl + K. A list of possible e-mail addresses will be shown.

Be advised that Outlook 2002 does not save copies of your sent messages to the IMAP server automatically. For instruction on how to create a rule so that your outgoing messages are saved on the server and not in your local mail, see Solution 9202.
