Synopsis:
Office 2003: How to install Microsoft Office 2003 and where to get it

Solution:
If you are a faculty or staff member using a University configured DeSC computer, please see your SCAD or DCS representative prior to manually installing this software. If you require the services of Software Support or your RCC to assist with these installations, please contact the Help Desk at 8-HELP.

Hardware/Software Requirements for Office 2003
OIT recommends that your system have at least:

  • Windows 2000 operating system
  • 128 MB of RAM
  • 133 MHz processor speed
  • 245 MB of free space on the hard drive where Office will be installed

Faculty and Staff University owned machines
Office 2003 may also be downloaded and installed from the FILES server while on campus or connected via VPN. Microsoft Office 2003 can be found on the FILES server in the following directory: \\FILES\src\Office2003

  • To update an existing install of Office 2003 that was previously installed from \\NTFILESHARE, you must first uninstall Office 2003 Pro (and any other Office 2003 applications, such as Frontpage) from the Add/Remove Programs control panel. Then run the Install Office 2003 Pro - Reinstall shortcut.
  • To install a new copy of Office 2003 on a machine that has never had office run the Install Office 2003 Pro shortcut.
  • To upgrade Office XP to Office 2003 run the Install Office 2003 Pro - Reinstall shortcut.

This installer has been customized to do the following:

  • Install Office 2003 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook) with LIS (Local Installation Source). Note: LIS allows for better management of future Office updates via Microsoft or Princeton's own software update services.
  • Apply Office 2003 SP2 automatically after installation of Office.

Additionally, you can also install other parts of Office 2003 on Princeton-owned computers which are allowed under the campus agreement license. They are also installed with LIS.

Other Office 2003 Applications:

  • FrontPage 2003 - run Install FrontPage 2003
  • Publisher 2003 - run Install Publisher 2003
  • InfoPath 2003 - run Install InfoPath 2003

Faculty and Staff Work At Home Rights
Faculty and staff who have Office installed on their institutionally-owned work computer may install Office on their home computer for work-related purposes only. (For unrestricted use, faculty/staff should purchase a personal copy of the software under the Microsoft Student Select Agreement - see below.) OIT cannot loan CDs to faculty and staff to take home for software installation. MS Office may be obtained in the following ways:

  • Downloaded from the FILES server while on campus or connected from home using VPN.
  • Installed on campus by a departmental SCAD or DCS
  • Installed at the OIT Solutions Center Clinic

If media (a CD with installation software) is desired, special Work At Home CDs are required and may be purchased at OIT Software Sales - click on the Personal Purchases link. A Work at Home agreement must also be signed, which stipulates that the software is being used for work purposes only. If the media is being purchased through Software Sales, or installed in the Clinic, the form is signed in the OIT Solutions Center Depot. If it is being downloaded from the FILES server, see the OIT Software Sales web page and click on the Home Use Form link. This form should be kept on file in Software Sales. If employment at Princeton ends, the software must be removed from the home computer.

Students, Faculty and Staff Personal Purchases - Microsoft Student Select Agreement
Office 2003 licenses are no longer available for sale. If you wish to have Office 2003 on your computer, it is recommended that you purchase an Office 2007 Pro+ license and CD - which includes "downgrade rights" to Office 2003. You may then go to the Tech Clinic, present your Office Pro+ license/CD order, and the Clinic staff will assist you in installing Office 2003. (Office 2007 Pro+ licenses and CDs are currently on backorder. You will receive e-mail notification when they are available for pickup at the OIT Tech Depot, 113 Frist Campus Center.) The Office Pro+ license and CD costs $57 and can be purchased at Software Sales - click on the Personal Purchases link.

SCI Purchasers - Student Campus Agreement
Students who are enrolled in Student Campus Agreement are entitled to new versions of Office during the term of their enrollment. Media may be picked up at the OIT Tech Depot, 113 Frist Campus Center. The software does not have to be removed upon graduation. However, if a student withdraws prior to graduation, the software must be removed.
