Title:
SCI: Why should I buy an SCI computer?
Question: What kind of computer should I buy?

Answer: If you are student coming to Princeton, we strongly recommend that the computer you bring is an SCI computer. Here's why:

  • OIT assistance and support
SCI computers are fully supported by the Office of Information Technology (OIT). The laptops are pre-configured for the Princeton University network and come pre-installed with a robust set of software and tools selected by the University. OIT provides convenient and expert computer support, including warranty repair. OIT consultants can rapidly re-install the SCI software and return your computer to the way it was when it first arrived. No waiting hours for a computer to be reinstalled with its operating system and software packages. Need it done in a hurry? Visit the OIT Solutions Center in the Frist Solutions Center. Or, for your convenience a student OIT Residential Computer Consultant (RCC) can schedule a visit to your room. OIT RCCs have the software re-installation image and can bring it to you.

  • Complete Care three-year warranty
All models include a three-year warranty. Dell models include Complete Care--a plan that covers repair costs due to accidental damage.

  • Computer loaner program
If a repair is required, loaner computers are available on a first come, first served basis to SCI customers.

  • Network-ready with wireless technology
SCI computers are pre-registered for access to the Princeton network and network resources. SCI computers also include built-in wireless for accessing the network in OIT wireless zones, including your dorm room.

  • Pre-installed and pre-configured software
SCI computers come with University recommended software pre-installed, including Microsoft Office and EndNote bibliographic software. The laptops are also pre-configured to be as secure as possible to minimize viruses, using automatic software update technology and Symantec AntiVirus.

  • No cost Microsoft product updates
SCI computers include a special license from Microsoft that allows for updates to the SCI suite of Microsoft software at a very small media cost, including Microsoft Office and the Windows operating system, for as long as you are an enrolled Princeton student. This applies to both Windows-based and Apple machines.

  • Software for math, science and engineering students
As an add-on option, students can order their SCI computers with Matlab and Mathematica software, as well as a scientific word processor. S-Plus is also included on Windows computers.

  • Attractive pricing with several payment options
Computer prices are negotiated specifically for Princeton University students and can be paid for with a credit card, a student account, a loan through the Financial Aid Office, or with a Princeton Computer Installment Loan.
