IMAP E-Mail: The LDAP Directory
You can lookup user information by searching the
Online Campus Directory.
All the information listed on this page is stored in the LDAP directory.
Every user on campus has an entry in the directory. These entries become
especially useful when you configure your e-mail client to search the LDAP
directory. The directory will allow you to address e-mails by merely typing
the person's first name, or searching for their NetID from a listing of all
Princeton users. A later section on E-Mail Clients
will walk you through the configuration process.
Try looking yourself up in the directory and verify that all the information
is correct. Keep reading to find out how you can change what's listed under
your name.
Exchange E-Mail: Active Directory
You can lookup user information by searching
Active Directory.
Every user on campus has an AD entry that lists important information about
their account, including their membership in OUs and whether or not their
e-mail account is Exchange enabled.
The IMAP and Exchange e-mail services rely on
separate directories. while only one of these directories is pertinent to
your e-mail account, you have an entry in each directory and should read
both sections for a fuller understanding of the purpose served by each directory.
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is the protocol upon which the
central online directory at Princeton is based. This LDAP directory is used
for storing information about people, servers, access control and other data.
The IMAP e-mail system uses LDAP extensively to authenticate and determine
limits of people using Princeton mail servers.
Active Directory (AD) is an integral part of the Windows domain structure.
The directory is divided into Organizational Units (OUs), and a user's membership
in OUs allows appropriate access to central fileservers and other Windows
services. AD is responsible for user authentication when logging into the
domain or into one's Exchange e-mail account. Because of the close link between
Exchange e-mail and Active Directory, Exchange-enabled users will be able
to use AD lookup to address their e-mails by typing part of the person's
name or searching for their e-mail address from a list of all Princeton users.
