Title:
E-mail: How to configure your return address in your e-mail application

Synopsis:
E-mail: How to set your return address in your e-mail application

Solution:
Whether you are using the IMAP (Standard) e-mail service or you are in a department that is using the Exchange (Enhanced) e-mail and calendaring system, your e-mail address is YourNetID@princeton.edu. Behind the scenes, the e-mail system figures out where to deliver your e-mail messages. Use the instructions below to make sure you are using the standard Princeton return address.

Mozilla / Firefox / Netscape 7.x

  • In the Window pulldown menu, select Mail and Newsgroups...
  • In the Edit pulldown menu, select Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings....
  • Make sure your full name and return address are reflected properly

Outlook 2000 and 2002 (XP)

  • From the Tools pulldown menu, select E-mail Accounts...
  • Click the radio button next to View or change existing e-mail accounts to select this option
  • Click the Next button
  • Select your imap.princeton.edu e-mail account and click the Change... button
  • Make sure your full name and return address are reflected properly

For other e-mail applications, see E-Mail: Configuration settings for Princeton recommended e-mail applications.

On the Horizon
In an effort to complete some important e-mail system housekeeping and also reduce the number of e-mail addresses that spammers can use, OIT will be retiring old e-mail address names that have accumulated over the years. What this means to you is that you should be using YourNetID@princeton.edu as your return address if you use the standard IMAP or Exchange service provided by OIT. This style of e-mail address is the right style when you subscribe to electronic mailing lists, publish an academic paper, or print your e-mail address on a business card or a resume.

On April 25, 2005, the following list of address styles will no longer be valid:

  • YourNetID@flagstaff.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@tucson.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@yuma.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@arachne.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@aragon.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@arelia.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@ariel.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@arundel.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@boater.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@fedora.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@fez.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@ernie.princeton.edu
  • YourNetID@phoenix.princeton.edu (use of this address form is not recommended and will be unsupported at some point in the future)

If someone tries to send mail to you with one of these old style address, the e-mail system will send back a message that the address no longer works and needs to be updated. The message will also contain the web address of the Online Campus Directory. People who need to get in touch with you can easily find your current information.

Make sure you check your listserv e-mail messages as well; if you subscribed to a mailing list long ago with one of the above domain names, the mail from your listserv will bounce once the domain names are retired. You should unsubscribe and resubscribe using netID@princeton.edu to make sure you are still a valid address on the list.

Note that departmental e-mail addresses (for example ee.princeton.edu, etc.) will not be affected by this change.
