DeSC: Do I have a DeSC computer? How can I tell?
Solution:
The Princeton University administrative DeSC computer is a particular computer
model, running a particular set of central software, intended for the use
of University administrators and faculty. The DeSC computer program at Princeton
maintains a standard hardware and software desktop environment for use at
the University; intended to streamline costs associated with application
development, software installation, computing support, system administration,
and software licensing.
The computer standard is updated every 12 months, or as changes in technology dictate. The current recommended hardware standard can be found at: DeSC Hardware Standards.
How can you tell if you have a DeSC computer?
Look in the system tray in the lower right hand corner of your computer.
If you have small DeSC icon like the one circled in the image below, your
computer is a DeSC computer. This icon allows users of DeSC machines to verify
that their machine is a DeSC machine and to view information about the machine
when
selected
.
If you double-click on the icon, you will see the hostname of your computer
as well as other useful information to technical support staff.
