Title:
Web publishing: OIT Web Development Services and Roxen overview
Synopsis:
All University departments, programs, research groups, and offices should consider Web Development Services as a provider for cost-effective and sustainable websites that meet University requirements. Before hiring external contractors, review these offerings from the OIT Web Development Services group for savings efficient alternatives.

Solution:

The Web Development Services group provides design, development, training and support for University web sites, primarily within the Drupal and Roxen content management system.

What are the benefits?

  • Free, secure, 24/7, redundant hosting on OIT servers
  • Professional design and application development
  • Editing anywhere, anytime using a web browser
  • Tiered services to support simple through complex needs
  • Modules and plug-ins
  • Free training and multiple channels of support
  • A community of experts and users from across the campus

How much does it cost to create a new website?
Services are tiered to meet the needs of those with no or limited budgets as well as of those who request customized design or development. The group creates framework sites for editors to enter and manage their own content. General training and support are provided at no cost. We aim to create common solutions to help reduce costs and improve ease of use for departments that need new websites.

  • Tier 1: No Cost (currently only available with the Roxen system)
Provides a framework for a content-ready site, using an existing design theme. Turn-around time is generally one to two business days. Also offered are standard modules for publishing News stories, an Events calendar, a People directory, Course List, Photo Gallery, and videos.

  • Tier 2: Low Cost (currently only available with the Roxen system)
Provides a minimally customized design, based on an existing design theme. Changes to theme banners such as the addition of photography or a departmental logo, or the creative application of color are used to individualize a site. Such sites generally cost up to $500.

  • Tier 3: Custom Sites (available with both the Drupal and Roxen systems)
Services include application development as well as custom design and styling of standard modules to match design. Custom sites range in complexity, and therefore price.

Experience has shown that due to OIT's tightly integrated processes, expertise in design and usability, and its in-depth knowledge of underlying technologies, it is able to offer departments a complete service for custom sites at a fraction of the cost charged by external vendors. Recent custom sites have ranged from approximately $3,000 to $28,000. By working with OIT's Web Development Services, departments have realized savings of up to 85% over prices quoted by vendors.
