How do I manually download my personal e-mail and files from OIT servers to my local computer? This would include H: drive data, the public_html website, as well as Pine or e-mail folders.
Solution:
When you graduate and leave campus, you should make sure that you download
to your personal computer those files which you have stored on OIT servers.
This includes the documents that you have stored on your H: drive as well
as your e-mail.
OIT provides an online suite of tools called the Digital Suitcase that can pack up your personal intellectual property for you to take with you. See www.princeton.edu/suitcase to begin.
If you would like to manually download your e-mail and documents, use the links below.
To download your e-mail, see one of the following based upon your software:
- Thunderbird/SeaMonkey/Mozilla: kb.princeton.edu/9698
- Mac OS X Mail: kb.princeton.edu/9696
- Outlook: kb.princeton.edu/9699
If you have been storing your papers and school work on your H: drive, simply drag those files to your hard drive in order to copy them there. This would include your personal website which is in your public_html folder. To download files from your H: drive, see one of the following solutions based upon your operating system:
- Windows: kb.princeton.edu/9697
- Mac OS X: kb.princeton.edu/9695
If you read your e-mail in a SSH session using Pine, you must use a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) application to download your mail folders. Secure FTP can also be used to transfer other files from your Unix account, such as your personal website and H: drive data. For detailed information about using Secure FTP, see: kb.princeton.edu/5096
Alternatives:
Sometimes there are situations where you might not have access to your own
personal computer and need to use an alternate solution for downloading your
files from OIT servers before your accounts are closed. For example, perhaps
you are traveling out of the country and do not have your own computer. You
might want to consider a strategy of connecting from a friend's computer
and copying your data to an alternate device such as: a portable USB key,
an MP3 player, an iPod, a Jump Drive, a Zip Drive, or any other portable
device that has storage space. If you need help with this type of situation,
contact the OIT Help Desk at 8-4357 (option 1) for suggestions.
