Macintosh OS X: How to connect to the Central File Server and mount your H: Drive
Solution:
Mac OS X is equipped with built-in Samba technology that allows it to map
your personal account on the Central
File Server and view it as a folder. This is much like mapping your H:
drive on a Windows computer (the way it appears on a cluster computer). Make
sure your computer is properly networked. For complete networking information
for OS X, see Solution 9262.
If you are not on campus and cannot access the Princeton network, you will need to use VPN (Virtual Private Networking) to connect to your H: drive. For instruction, see www.princeton.edu/vpn.
To connect to the Central File Server
- With the Finder active, select Connect to Server... from the Go menu, or from the keyboard use Command-K.
- In the Connect to Server window, type the following Address field: smb://yourNetID@files.princeton.edu/yourNetID
- Click the Connect button
- You will be presented with the SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication window
- Enter Princeton for Workgroup/Domain
- Enter your netID for Username
- Enter your University password
- The mapped drive will appear on your desktop where you can interact with it like any other folder on your hard drive.
- Note: Macintosh OS 9 computers cannot connect to the Central File Server unless using Windows emulation software.
- For instructions on file sharing with PCs using OS X's Samba technology, please see Solution 9256.
