Title:
Tigernet: Explanation of new network charging and elimination of billing

Synopsis:
Tigernet: Eliminating networking bills to academic departments and most other units

Solution:
As of July 1, 2006, OIT has simplified the funding and accounting for basic network connectivity costs. For all academic departments, non-endowed academic research units, and most administrative units, the University will provide centralized funding for all Tigernet port and host ID costs that are currently charged to sponsored research and other departmental funds. This subsidy will not be provided to endowed units, externally funded affiliates, and other similar units.

Because of this, accounting for host and port tigernet connections will change for most departments, effective July 2006. Any chargeable host or port registered to an affected department will be assigned a new project/grant number. The new project/grant numbers will start with 7991 and the last three digits will be the first three digits of the old project/grant.

For example, if the current project/grant number is 101-xxxx, the new project/grant number will be 799-1101.

Mass updates will be done in the Hostmaster Database and the Network Atlas database in July, 2006, to change current entries. After that date, all new entries to the Hostmaster database or Network Atlas database should be input with the new project/grant number.

At the end of each fiscal year, OIT will post the accumulated network costs for each department to a designated departmental project grant (XXX-1059) reserved solely for this use. OIT will post the charges only to maintain continuity in the University’s reporting of costs; departments will not be responsible for paying charges to their 1059 accounts.

In the future, departments and administrative units desiring additional network connections will request them from OIT. Basic installation costs and the monthly charges will be charged to the central University accounts, not to academic departments, non-endowed research units, or administrative units. OIT will thus manage and fund future growth centrally.

For those departments who will continue to be charged, please see the Tigernet Rates web site for the current rate structure.
