Title:
Mac OS X: eBrary and/or Blackboard not working properly in Safari web browser

Synopsis:
Mac OS X: eBrary and/or Blackboard not working properly in Safari web browser

Solution:
It has been reported that some Safari web browser plug-ins do not function at all (such as eBrary) or only partially (such as java apps in Blackboard) when run on Intel Apple computers.

2007 Update
A Universal eBrary Reader have been released (v2.10) to resolve the problem described below. If you are having an issue with eBrary and Safari, install the latest version of eBrary and take the extra step to delete the old plugin (which the installer doesn't remove automatically). See http://www.ebrary.com/discover/get_ebrary_reader.html to download the Reader; the site will automatically detect your operating system and present a download button.

Problem Description and Resolution for Historical Reference
The option for Safari to "Open using Rosetta" needs to be switched on or off.

  • Open the Applications Folder on your hard drive
  • Control-click (or right-click) on the application Safari and choose Get Info...
  • In the Safari Info window that opens, check the Open using Rosetta box for eBrary compatibility, or uncheck the Open using Rosetta box for Blackboard compatibility
  • Close the Safari Info window

Some older plug-ins, such as eBrary, require Safari to be opened using Rosetta. However, some newer plug-ins required by Blackboard cannot be run using Rosetta.

If you need to use Safari for both eBrary and Blackboard, the following is recommended:

  • Open your Applications Folder on your hard drive
  • Control-click (or right click) on the "Safari" application and choose Duplicate from the contextual menu
  • Select the new Safari Copy application by clicking on it once
  • Press the Return key to select the Safari Copy name, and rename the application to Safari Rosetta
  • Press the Return key again to commit the changed name

Use the steps above to configure "Safari Rosetta" applications to open using Rosetta. Also confirm that the original Safari application does not have the "Open using Rosetta" option checked. Once these steps are complete, you may now use both applications simultaneously to access web sites.
